{"id":89,"date":"2016-10-26T15:14:49","date_gmt":"2016-10-26T19:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rebeccaleone.com\/blog\/?p=89"},"modified":"2016-10-27T10:30:26","modified_gmt":"2016-10-27T14:30:26","slug":"make-it-your-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rebeccaleone.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/26\/make-it-your-own\/","title":{"rendered":"Make It Your Own"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you teach Pilates, you live in Joe&#8217;s shadow, whether you teach like he did or not.<\/p>\n<p>If you teach Pilates, you\u00a0are advancing his legacy through your own work,\u00a0whether you know anything about him or not.<\/p>\n<p>Making someone else&#8217;s work you own is often difficult. \u00a0It&#8217;s so difficult that we don&#8217;t need to\u00a0look beyond it\u00a0to explain the rift in the Pilates industry between the hard line classical devotees who stay true to what they believe is Joe&#8217;s work, often without having a clue what they&#8217;re doing, and the modernists who have fused and made Joe&#8217;s work contemporary, often without having a clue what they&#8217;re doing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unless and until you, what I call, &#8220;bring the story of your life to your work&#8221;, you&#8217;ll be selling the commodity that is &#8220;the P word&#8221; and when that happens, your efforts to position and promote <strong><em>yourself<\/em><\/strong> will be competing against the efforts of studios with\u00a0advertising budgets and\/or square footage and\/or equipment investments that are bigger than yours, and\/or more established than yours, who have staffs of teachers with more experience than you\/yours.<\/p>\n<p>When that\u00a0happens it&#8217;s really a shame\u00a0because the thing that makes it so amazing for clients<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>isn&#8217;t that you&#8217;re teaching whatever it is you&#8217;re teaching, it&#8217;s that they&#8217;re working with<strong> YOU. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How do we know that it&#8217;s you, you, you\u00a0at the very center of the client experience? \u00a0Patience is hard to learn; Kesha&#8217;s performance of this piece let&#8217;s us know she&#8217;s learned it.<\/p>\n<p>Kesha has a right to interpret Bob&#8217;s work, even with Bob still alive and performing it himself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Joe&#8217;s dead.<\/p>\n<p>You, and how you teach, and how you work are the only way for Joe to be relevant today.<\/p>\n<p>Without you, and your next client, Joe&#8217;s work will be as dead as he is.<\/p>\n<p>You have every right to Joe&#8217;s work &#8211; we all do.<\/p>\n<p>You have every right to make it your own &#8211; we all do.<\/p>\n<p>Then and only then will your unique talents, gifts and genius shine through.<\/p>\n<p>Then and only then will you have brought the story of your life to your work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Be like Kesha and boldly perform master work, even right in front of the master or his most judgmental legacy holders.<\/p>\n<p>Be like Kesha and bravely make genius works your own.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t, the world won&#8217;t\u00a0know\u00a0<em>you, <\/em>and what <em>you<\/em> can do &#8211; and neither will your clients.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t, you&#8217;ll be the cover band of Pilates teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The world doesn&#8217;t need more impersonators of Joe, the world needs YOU!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Joe got his chance. \u00a0Make sure you get yours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Need help?
